In 1974, a steel knife, made in 112 A.D., in the sixth year of Yongchu of the Eastern Han Dynasty (AD 112), was unearthed from a Han tomb in Cangshan, Linyi, Shandong Province. It has a total length of 111.5cm. On the back of the sword, there is an inscription in gold: "thirty broadsword made in Bingwu in May of the sixth year of Yongchu can be seen as the descendants of Jiyang". "Seeing" means refining. This is the first 100 steel-making type product developed so far. Scientific examination shows that the carbon content of this steel knife is relatively uniform, and the impurities in the blade are similar to those of modern wrought iron after quenching. There are many kinds of steelmaking, such as "five refining", "nine refining", "thirty refining", "Fifty refining", "seventy-two refining" and "multiple refining". Researchers generally think that the specific meaning of these specific numbers in front of the word refining refers to the number of times of heating, that is, how much fire was tempered. Shen Kuo, a famous scientist in the Northern Song Dynasty, described the process of making steel in Cizhou in Meng Xi Bi Tan, which was continuous firing and forging for more than 100 times until the weight was not reduced. Cao Cao once ordered a secretary to make five "Baipi knives", which were called "multiple refined sharp weapons" in neijieling. Sun Quan has three swords, one of which is called "Bailian". The sabre made by Pu Yuan for Liu Bei is engraved with "72 refining". It can be seen that in the Three Kingdoms period, 100 steelmaking was quite common. The demand of Baigang steel is increasing. Because of the low production efficiency of raw material block in ironmaking, it can only be obtained by "cooling" after smelting. Therefore, the development of Baigang is limited. In order to break through this limitation, ancient Chinese craftsmen invented a new pig iron steelmaking technology - stir frying steel.
